February Tuition is Due

Let me know if you can bring any of the following to class on Tuesday.  
I'm bringing chicken and beef!

One of my students from the Tuesday class wanted me to share that he'll be at SkyZone's homeschool day tomorrow from 2:00-4:00.  I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it, but I think some Freebird Farm students will be there!  I'll try my best ;-)

Science

  • Read through the Quest Guide sheet for "Rome Rules" on page 72.  This will give you a glimpse of the chapter and help you recognize important people, places, events, etc.
  • Bring in corrections to the last four problems on your science test to improve your grade!
  • Read chapter 19.  As always, it's good to jot down notes as you read!
    • As you read through this chapter, be paying attention to the differences between ancient Greece and ancient Rome.  Jot down differences on page 73 of your Quest Guide, and add a quote for Strabo at the bottom of the page.
  • Watch this video on the Silk Road:
  • In your notebook, answer the following questions.  You do not need to write the questions, but please write your answer in complete sentences so that ANYONE would understand and learn from the response, without needing to know the question!
    • What factors hindered early connections between early river valley civilizations? 
    • What role did nomadic people play in the establishment of the Silk Road trade
    • What religion makes it way from India along Silk Roads to China? 
    • What did the diffusion of maritime technology, like the magnetic compass, lead to?
    • Silk Road trade led to global exchange and cultural blending to create new cultural elements. Can you think of a specific example of how the modern world economy has led to similar effects?

Literature

  • Bring in your highlighted speech activity from last week.  We'll talk about it in class on Tuesday!
  • You have a BIG ESSAY this week!  Click here and choose one of the topics.  You will need an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.  This needs to be written in formal language, so avoid using first person, slang terms, too many contractions, etc.  This should not sounds like you are talking to a friend.  Also, it's been a while since we talked about it in class, but be sure to avoid telling your audience that you are going to tell them something.  This is a common mistake at your age level!  So, avoid things like "Now, I'm going to explain..." or "I would like to now tell you..."  
    • Grammar, punctuation, and capitalization counts.  If you are turning in your first draft, you are doing it wrong!  First, brainstorm and make an outline or sketch out your main ideas on paper.  Then, write a rough draft.  (I'd leave the intro and conclusion paragraphs until the end!)  Have someone else look it over and then rewrite!
  • Brainstorm some ideas for our Animal Farm Summary Storyboard.  Just jot them down in your notebook so we can discuss and come up with a plan in class!
  • We'll view your ads in class!  Remember, there is no WiFi in the schoolhouse... so everything needs to be on your device or on a USB flashdrive!  If you sent it to my phone, I will need to work on getting it over to my laptop so it can be viewed directly from my drive.
