If you plan to stop by on Wednesday, it will be12:30-2:30.... but no restrooms!! Go before you come, and we'll be outside hanging out at a safe distance. I have tables that I can set out.... or you can bring a blanket and sit on the grass! Bring a snack/drink for yourself.... no one will be close enough to each other to touch anything. I'm not taking any risks!
Science
Read chapters 29 & 30.
Look over everything you've learned in Chapters 25-30.
Choose ONE:
Choose any century in human history and write about the top ten scientific achievements during that time frame.
Interview a grandparent or older relative about how science has changed their lives since childhood.
Please check Google Classroom for the writing assignment that we talked about in class. Be sure to have someone look over it and make corrections before you turn it in. The Rubric for grading is attached.
Here is the link to your cumulative final exam for this school year.
We will have a VERY distanced "get together" for this class on 5/13 from 12:30-2:30. I will have a TABLE for each student spread out in the schoolyard. (I am only doing this for the 7th/8th graders since there are only 7 of them.) If you do not feel comfortable, that's fine! Just let me know if you would like to bring the family out to the farm for a family picnic, instead! :-)
Take notes over the material in Quest guide pages 100 & 101.
For this week, I need each of you to do your VERY BEST on this next assignment.
You will each be writing a speech for an "in class" debate. We will not be working in groups for your initial writing. I would like to be able to assess each of your understanding of the topic, individually. However, I will be choosing your invention!
Check to be sure April tuition payment has been sent. I have Venmo now, as well, if you need it.
If
anyone has employment issues due to COVID-19, please let me know...
I'll work it out. ❤ I've taken on a few tutoring students in order to
cover all costs. NO STUDENT OF MINE WILL LEAVE MY CLASSES DUE TO
EMPLOYMENT ISSUES. Love you guys. ALL of my Freebird Farm classes (Farm Fusion AND FreeRangers classes of all ages) are invited to a music "concert" on Fridays at 10am. If you play a musical instrument and want to share you talent, choose 1 song and log in between 9:45 & 10:00 to get on the list! Everyone is welcome to log in and listen. It's been a really peaceful and positive experience! To join, just use the Zoom meeting code available on Google Classroom. I don't like to post it publicly. ;-)
Science
Oh my goodness I LOVE this video. It's fast, but definitely watch it!!
RESEARCH-- You must research the Fibonacci Sequence/Golden Ratio in Art, Music, or Architecture. As you research, focus in on one example that is mentioned. Copy a picture to share with the class via Sharing Screen in Tuesday's class. Be sure you can tell about how it fits the sequence!
Read chapter 26 and complete this online quizover the material. You can use your book and your notebook.
We will be working on GROUPS for our Quest Guide Assignment this week! You have to read the chapter thoroughly before you can start. Each group will be completing a section of the guide and then it will be up to your group to teach the class about your topic. You can present your material in any way you'd like!
C.K. & G.H. - p. 93 & 94
M.M. & P.R & B.J. - p. 95 & 96
G.B. & Z.S - p. 97 & 98
Grammar
Complete lessons 105, 106, and 107.
Check them as you go. This week, I would like for you to post any starred questions on Classroom AS YOU GO. So, if you complete lesson 105 and come to a tricky problem, jump on Classroom and post it under the new thread titled "⭐Grammar Questions⭐". I will address them as you post them so that we can save our in class time for more fun things. ;-)
Please be sure that you have thoroughly read the book and are familiar with all of the characters. We will have a fun activity "in class" that will definitely go better for you if you have done the reading!
I'm uploading your revisions to your shared Google Drive by midnight on Wed 4/15. Please revise and correct your essay. Resubmit the final draft via this linkby 6pm on Monday, 4/20.
Check to be sure April tuition payment has been sent. I have Venmo now, as well, if you need it.
If anyone has employment issues due to COVID-19, please let me know... I'll work it out. ❤ I've taken on a few tutoring students in order to cover all costs. NO STUDENT OF MINE WILL LEAVE MY CLASSES DUE TO EMPLOYMENT ISSUES.
Love you guys.
These things are not due until 4/14!!! Guess what? With all of the craziness, I forgot that next week is our spring break! Although you don't have to do ANY work at all for it, I will host a fun session for you on Tuesday from 1:00-2:30. Since you are stuck at home, I thought it would be nice to do something fun "together".
Science
Look over the Quest Guide pages 89 & 91 before you begin reading.
Read chapter 25: Absolute Zero
Check out the pages 226 & 227 on Fibonacci's numbers.
Grab a ruler. Start looking for ANYTHING around you that meets this Golden Ratio. Write down what you find, and we'll talk about it in class. It's fascinating!
Complete the Quest Guide Sheet page 90. First, add numbers to the number line. Then, use the definitions at the bottom of the page and label the areas of the number line with the correct terms.
Choose ONE from the list (or come up with your own that isn't on the list). Research this person and write an essay (5 paragraphs, please) that explains how the characteristics and actions of this person would make this person a good "Fighter". We will read this in class next week, but I also want you to copy and paste your essay here.
For those who had slow connections and would like to do the orbit activity at home, here is a link to the instructions. We used a 9.5" string to make our loop.
In class we talked about the adoption of Arabic numbers to replace Roman numerals for arithmetic. Look up Roman numerals (if needed) and complete this page.
We are going to have an informal assessment of this Unit. You can use any material that you have to complete these pages.
ATTENTION-- The last 2 pages are OPTIONAL. This is an activity to create a rap over the information in chapters 19-24. You don't have to, but it would be hilariously fun. :-D (I included an example.)
I also need you to complete this test and send it to me by MONDAY night at 6pm. Not kidding. Don't send it to me Tuesday.
Literature
Read chapters 4-7
Complete the reading comprehension questions for chapters 4 & 5. I've also included a page that we are going to participate in as a class. Instead of participating in groups, we will do this as one big group of 7. Write down ONE thing per person... and send your list to me as soon as possible! :-)
You guys ROCK! Thank you for being so awesome and flexible. I'll get better with the technology as we go, but we are off to a great start to the coronapocalypse! Science-

Take notes as you read on all important concepts!
Please be sure to read the information in the boxes, especially page 214!

Grammar-
Complete the More Practice sections for 87 & 89. (scroll back to last week's post for corrections)
Do lessons 92, 93, and 94. Please check all work and mark anything confusing with a star. Or, if you are really stuck, just send me a message!
I want you to do something different this week. I would like for you to write a letter to yourself 10 in the future. The changes taking place and the decisions being made, both in our country and in our world, are major events in history. Tell yourself about what things are like for you and your family right now. This doesn't have to be fancy or full of research. It's actually FOR YOU. We will read them in class next week, but they are ultimately for you to keep for the future to remind yourself of this experience.
***We will not have class in person, but we WILL have online class Tuesday from 12:00-3:00!** Please be sure to have Google Hangouts on your device or computer. I would like to make sure to try connecting with you in advance before class begins on Tuesday. I'll text you Friday to help you set things up! By the way, we did this for three students on Thursday who could not come to class, and it worked perfectly! Yay!***
We also cannot go to the movie theater on Tuesday. Social distancing is needed to keep the virus from spreading through our community, so we need to avoid crowds!

Your video project for Animal Farm is due on Tuesday. We can share it online!!!
Your video project due date has been moved to 3/17.
If the movie Call of the Wild will still be in at NCG theater when we finish the book, I would love to go to a showing at the end of class on 3/17. It would be a showing around 2:00-3:00, but we won't know exactly until closer to time. We could also help each other with transportation. Let me know if this sounds possible for you!

Rome is about to FALL! Read chapters 22 & 23.
Instead of taking notes, I want you to create a newspaper depicting events, opinions, etc. during the time of the fall of Rome. You can create it with a computer program such as Microsoft Publisher, Word, etc. You can also create it by hand. Please use this as an opportunity to show me what you learned from these two chapters about this time in history!
Grammar
Complete lessons 83 and 84.
Complete lesson 85 (only the Practice section)
Complete lesson 86
Literature
Please bring in anything needed to finish filming your Animal Farm project!
Call of the Wild has a LOT of vocabulary words that you will need to know. You may already know some of these! I split them into chapters so you can read through the list and study the words before you read each chapter.
Create an entire page in your science notebook for Ptolemy. Research his contributions and significance. You do not need to write in paragraph form, but take notes and jot down what you learn. (HINT-- You will need this for an activity that we will be doing in class!)
Complete the Silk Road latitude/longitude sheet.
Optional-- Put together the Star Chart packet given to you in class.
Our next unit test will be after chapter 24. (March 24th)
Grammar

Choose one of the following short stories to read online. Complete this sheet either by printing it or writing the information in your literature notebook. We will be discussing your choice in our chair circle on Tuesday.
Submit your highlighted Squealer's Speech assignment on Google Classroom.
In class, you came up with the rough outline for your project. Over the week, see if you can work together to begin planning your video. We will have plenty of time in class to finish planning and filming, but you will definitely need to work on it at home, as well!
Let me know if you can bring any of the following to class on Tuesday.
I'm bringing chicken and beef!
(I'll cross things off here as people sign up!)
-Shredded lettuce
-cilantro
-Sliced olives
-shredded cheese
-Mild salsa
-guacamole
-tortilla chips
-drinks 1
-drinks 2
-flour tortillas

Class begins at 11:45 and ends at 3:20 now! 😎
Thank you!
One of my students from the Tuesday class wanted me to share that he'll be at SkyZone's homeschool day tomorrow from 2:00-4:00. I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it, but I think some Freebird Farm students will be there! I'll try my best ;-)
Science
Read through the Quest Guide sheet for "Rome Rules" on page 72. This will give you a glimpse of the chapter and help you recognize important people, places, events, etc.
Bring in corrections to the last four problems on your science test to improve your grade!
Read chapter 19. As always, it's good to jot down notes as you read!
As you read through this chapter, be paying attention to the differences between ancient Greece and ancient Rome. Jot down differences on page 73 of your Quest Guide, and add a quote for Strabo at the bottom of the page.
Watch this video on the Silk Road:
In your notebook, answer the following questions. You do not need to write the questions, but please write your answer in complete sentences so that ANYONE would understand and learn from the response, without needing to know the question!
What factors hindered early connections between early river valley civilizations?
What role did nomadic people play in the establishment of the Silk Road trade
What religion makes it way from India along Silk Roads to China?
What did the diffusion of maritime technology, like the magnetic compass, lead to?
Silk Road trade led to global exchange and cultural blending to create new cultural elements. Can you think of a specific example of how the modern world economy has led to similar effects?
Grammar
Read through lesson 67 to remind yourself of our in-class discussion.
Complete the lesson, the exercises, the Practice section, and the More Practice section of lesson 68.
Complete the lesson, exercises, practice section, and the review set for lessons 69, 70, and 71.
Bring in your highlighted speech activity from last week. We'll talk about it in class on Tuesday!
You have a BIG ESSAY this week! Click here and choose one of the topics. You will need an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. This needs to be written in formal language, so avoid using first person, slang terms, too many contractions, etc. This should not sounds like you are talking to a friend. Also, it's been a while since we talked about it in class, but be sure to avoid telling your audience that you are going to tell them something. This is a common mistake at your age level! So, avoid things like "Now, I'm going to explain..." or "I would like to now tell you..."
Grammar, punctuation, and capitalization counts. If you are turning in your first draft, you are doing it wrong! First, brainstorm and make an outline or sketch out your main ideas on paper. Then, write a rough draft. (I'd leave the intro and conclusion paragraphs until the end!) Have someone else look it over and then rewrite!
Brainstorm some ideas for our Animal Farm Summary Storyboard. Just jot them down in your notebook so we can discuss and come up with a plan in class!
We'll view your ads in class! Remember, there is no WiFi in the schoolhouse... so everything needs to be on your device or on a USB flashdrive! If you sent it to my phone, I will need to work on getting it over to my laptop so it can be viewed directly from my drive.
For Valentine's Day, this class will have a TACO TUESDAY party on 2/11! Let me know if you can bring any of the following. I'm bringing chicken and beef!
(I'll cross things off here as people sign up!)
-Shredded lettuce -Diced tomatoes -cilantro
-Sliced olives
-shredded cheese
-Mild salsa
-guacamole
-tortilla chips
-drinks 1
-drinks 2
-flour tortillas
-dessert item
-dessert item
-anything else I didn't think of that would be yummy with tacos!
Class begins at 11:45. I seem to always run out of time... I just have too much that I want to do. If it would be possible for you to stay until 3:20 each week, can you let me know? I would love to extend the day for this Tuesday class IF it's easy for everyone. Thanks!
Science
Heads up-- There is NOT a lot of science this week, but there IS a lot of literature! Don't slack off until Sunday/Monday!
We will have a test over chapters 14-18 on Tuesday.
STUDY!
Grammar
Read through lesson 63 again. Complete the "More Practice" set ONLY. Then, click here to check your answers.
Complete lessons 64, 65, and 66. After you finish each lesson, click hereto check your work. Put a star beside any questions that you need to review in class!
Literature
Click here for a packet of vocabulary pages. The first two pages are for chapters 9 & 10. The rest of the pages are OPTIONAL vocab study material to help you prepare for the quiz on Tuesday.
Read chapters 9-10. There are no reading comprehension questions this week. Instead, I have a study guide packet for you to help you prepare for class. This is NOT required, but highly, HIGHLY, suggested.
Also, here is a wonderful resource that will help you get a better understanding of the novel. You can click on most of the links on the left side to explore the summary, theme, characters, analysis, etc. I highly suggest you spend some time on this site.
On Google Classroom, I posted a document that I would like for you to read through. The first page is the page that I had on the screen in class. You should have this material in your notes. Read through the next few pages of the document. This will correspond to the different types of advertisement strategies that we glued into our Literature Notebooks.
Watch this video on persuasive strategies:
Complete the COLOR CODING activity given to you in class. You need to use a highlighter or colored pencils to outline (or underline) the parts of Squealer's speech that utilize strategies of Ethos, Pathos, or Logos.
Bring in your Putin article activity from last week. If you didn't bring it to class on Tuesday, you get a chance to bring it in!
Create an ad for an existing OR an imaginary product. Use at least 3 techniques that are listed in your literature notebook (and in the document on Google Classroom). You can write the script for an ad that you perform in class, or you can make a video of one. If you make a video, you must send it to me as a file via Google Classroom so that I can save it to show in class (or you can save it to a USB flash drive).
Your ad should include at least 3 different techniques.
You need to explain your techniques on a notecard or piece of paper, listing whether or not they are pathos, ethos, or logos, as well as the specific type (bandwagon, name-calling, fear, plain folks, testimonial, glittering generalities, unwarranted extrapolation, bad logic, or other that isn't listed in our material.)
